An afternoon in Confolens

ConfolensFrance·June 9, 2026·city-sights

We spent an afternoon in the charming town of Confolens, a medieval city at the confluence of two rivers. Carmela and I had lunch along the main tributary, lingering over our meal while watching the river flow past. Afterwards, we wandered through the old streets and town square, full of stone buildings, little cafés, and shops typical of a small French town. Of course, I couldn’t resist sending the drone up for a better view — from above, Confolens looked even more picturesque, with the river winding through town and the rooftops clustered around its historic center. We have been there many times and it never gets old.

An afternoon in Confolens

Tucked at the meeting point of the Vienne and Goire rivers, the medieval town of Confolens has quietly played an important role in regional history for more than a thousand years. First mentioned in the 10th century, the town grew around a fortress controlled by the princes of Chabanais and sat along an old Roman route as well as a branch of the pilgrimage roads to Santiago de Compostela. During the Middle Ages, Confolens prospered as a trading center between the wine-producing regions of western France and the Limousin interior, known for leather, wood, and livestock. Its strategic importance can still be seen today in the 13th-century Pont Vieux, fortified walls, half-timbered merchant houses, and Romanesque churches that line the riverbanks. One unusual historical detail: for centuries the town was divided between two dioceses — Limoges on one side of the river and Poitiers on the other — making it a rare frontier town in medieval France.
